Infrared Sauna FAQ
It’s important to tailor your usage to your health and lifestyle. For most people, 3-4 sessions per week is ideal and safe.
Start with shorter sessions of about 10-15 minutes, then gradually increase to 20-30 minutes as your body adjusts to the heat. Make sure to stay hydrated before, during, and after your sessions.
Listen to your body and avoid overdoing it. If you start feeling lightheaded, dizzy, or uncomfortably hot, it’s best to exit the sauna and cool down.
There are no known side effects to red light therapy when used as directed.
*Red Light Therapy Contraindications
If you have a serious health condition or chronic illness, consult your doctor or pharmacist before starting any new therapy, including red light therapy, to address medication and other concerns.
RLT is generally safe and painless, with few side effects reported. However, some individuals have experienced headaches, irritability, or eye strain as minor side effects.
If you have bipolar disorder, consult your doctor before pursuing red light therapy, as there have been rare cases of RLT triggering mania in bipolar patients. The main cause of these risks is intense light or brightness, which can be mitigated by protecting your eyes during RLT sessions and avoiding direct eye contact with the light.
If you have photosensitivity due to conditions like lupus or are on photosensitive medications, it’s advisable to avoid red light therapy.
Remember, you know your body best—if you notice any changes or have concerns during red light therapy, don’t hesitate to consult your doctor. Trust your instincts!
While competitor products rely on a single optical output at 30°, Clearlight products like our Red Light Therapy towers boast a combination of 7° to 60° adjustable optics, delivering the widest range of healing light angles on the market. This intelligent design allows for greater light absorption by the skin, delivering more benefits in less time with each session.
With our Variable Optics™ technology, your body receives precise, pin-pointed light for targeted therapy on specific areas, as well as light for a comprehensive whole-body treatment. It’s a transformative approach to healing that ensures you get the most out of every session. Target specific areas with pinpoint precision or embrace full-body therapy, the choice is yours.
Yes. The ideal way to use any infrared sauna is to have the infrared heaters on the entire time producing the optimal infrared heat you desire.
Infrared heat is most effective at lower temperatures as sweat oils secrete at lower temperatures and this sweat is different from water sweat. Your Clearlight Infrared Sauna™ is designed to heat your body more than to heat the cabin (about 80% of the heat heats your body, and 20% of the heat heats the sauna cabin). The following is our recommendation for use of your sauna:
- Turn your sauna on and warm it up for about 10-15 minutes. The True Wave™ heaters in your sauna will reach their optimal operating temperature in this amount of time.
- After this short warm up time, get in the sauna and turn the thermostat up very high to ensure the heaters stay on continuously during your session. Generally, your infrared sauna session will range in temperature between 100-125°F.
- Sit back and enjoy your sauna session. Since the key to infrared therapy is heating your body core, you will find that you sweat more sitting up in the sauna with your back lined up with the back wall heaters heating your body core from the back. This positions you in such a way that the front wall heaters will be heating your front body core.
- During your session the temperature will slowly climb inside the sauna cabin. Remember, your Clearlight Infrared Sauna is heating your body more so than heating the air.
- Stay well hydrated. We emphasize this because it is essential to stay well hydrated when using your sauna. It is estimated that 70% of people are dehydrated. When you are dehydrated, your body holds on to water and will not allow you to sweat very much. It is recommended to drink water before you get in the sauna and bring a quart of water into the sauna with you and drink it during your session.
Don’t be fooled by other manufacturers that offer constant infrared heat by reducing the output of their heaters. At the reduced output, you are not receiving optimal infrared heat.
Yes, all Clearlight Infrared Sauna™ models can be used outside with our optional water-proof cover. Because we use high-pressure bindings and precision hand craftsmanship, our sauna cabinetry can endure outdoor humidity and dryness as long as you protect it with our water-proof cover.
Infrared saunas are designed to heat the human body, not the air. Only about 20% of the heat from our heaters goes to heat the air. Because of this, if you live in a place where the temperature gets below 40° F, we don’t recommend putting the sauna outside. It will take much longer for the cabin to warm up and it will not get as hot. Please consult one of our infrared sauna specialists for more information about putting your sauna outside.
Absolutely. We have designed an infrared heater kit and control system so you can install our True Wave™ heaters in your already existing sauna or one you are building yourself. You can even install these in that small room you’ve always wanted to convert into a sauna.
The heater package consists of enough heaters for your designated space, digital keypad control and power supply, all necessary cables, cedarwood, lights, and accessories. Just give us a call at 800.798.1779 x 850. We are happy to spec out a far-infrared heater system that will work for your space. Learn more about our custom infrared heater kits and submit your room dimensions for a quote.
Standard household electrical outlets are 120 volts. Most are rated at 15 amps and some, like bathrooms or kitchens, may be rated at 20 amps.
Clearlight Infrared Sauna™ models run on either 120v or 240v depending on the sauna model and the size of the sauna. Please review the specification for the model you are interested in to see the electrical requirement or talk to your Infrared Sauna Specialist.
Many of our sauna models will plug into any standard household outlet. Many models require you to hire an electrician to install the proper electrical circuit.
North American Basswood is a “white” wood with a yellow to whitish color. Basswood has a very dense cellular structure making it stronger, more stable, and sweat resistant. It is also resistant to cracking and splitting.
Basswood is also considered hypoallergenic. It has almost no odor and is one of the only woods not considered a “sensitizer” for people with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities.
Mahogany is a beautiful reddish/brown wood known for its use in high-quality furniture, boats, and musical instruments. We only use sustainable grade “A” clear mahogany for our infrared saunas giving Clearlight mahogany infrared saunas their unique and beautiful look.
Mahogany is known for its durability and beauty, with a similar hardness to Basswood. It will not get hot to the touch when you experience relaxation inside your sauna. Mahogany is the ideal material known for its use in boat building as it holds up very well when exposed to moisture; therefore, it provides additional benefits for uses within a sauna increasing the durability with sweat resistance. It stands up well to environmental factors and has an overall resistance from cracking and splitting that you might otherwise encounter with lesser-grade wood materials.
The infrared wavelength emitted by an infrared heater depends on its surface temperature. Generally, the lower the surface temperature, the longer the infrared wavelength and the more beneficial the heat.
Our large True Wave® heaters are designed to operate at an ideal surface temperature, delivering exceptional far infrared heat. This results in the majority of the infrared heat falling within the critical wavelength range of 5-15 microns, with a significant portion at 9.4 microns—the optimal absorption range for the human body.
Clearlight Infrared Saunas uniquely offer the patented True Wave® heaters, which combine high infrared output from ceramic with long-wave carbon infrared heat. This exclusive technology ensures the most effective infrared heating available, found only in Clearlight Infrared Saunas.
When purchasing an infrared sauna, it’s crucial to understand the value of a Limited Lifetime Warranty. Our warranty covers all parts and components of your sauna for manufacturing defects for as long as you own it.
In contrast, most other infrared saunas come with a warranty of 7 years or less. If issues arise after this period, manufacturers are not obligated to provide parts for saunas older than 7 years.
Clearlight Infrared Sauna models intended for home use come with our comprehensive Limited Lifetime Warranty, ensuring coverage against manufacturer defects for the entire duration of ownership.
When evaluating infrared saunas, make sure to inquire if the company offers a True Limited Lifetime Warranty.
For commercial use, we provide a full 5-year warranty.
Infrared heat is entirely safe, as it is a natural part of our environment and essential for life. All objects emit and absorb infrared heat. In fact, hospitals use similar infrared heaters to warm newborns, demonstrating its safety and efficacy. The human body emits and absorbs infrared in the far infrared spectrum. For example, when a mother rubs her baby’s stomach to ease discomfort, the infrared heat from her hand is providing relief. Our True Wave® heaters are designed to emit far infrared in the same range to ensure optimal absorption and therapeutic benefits for your body.
Infrared saunas operate on the principle of radiant heat, a form of energy that warms objects directly without having to heat the air in between.
The term ”infrared“ might sound technical, but it’s important to note that it refers to non-ionizing radiation, which is different from the potentially harmful ionizing radiation emitted by, for example, X-rays. Infrared radiation is not only safe for the human body but provides a soothing internal warmth that provides several potential benefits.
Unlike traditional saunas that heat the air with steam or dry heat, infrared saunas use infrared light waves to directly warm your body. These infrared waves, which are part of the electromagnetic spectrum, penetrate your skin and muscles, increasing your core temperature and promoting detoxification.
A notable advantage of infrared saunas is their ability to function at a lower ambient temperature, usually between 48.8-65.5 degrees Celsius. This is significantly cooler compared to traditional saunas, which can reach up to 90.5 degrees Celsius. As a result, infrared saunas offer a more comfortable experience while still providing effective heat therapy.
Yes, infrared saunas can support weight loss, but they should not be the primary method for achieving it. Here’s how they can help:
Increased Metabolic Rate: The heat from an infrared sauna elevates your heart rate and boosts your metabolism, akin to the effects of moderate exercise. This increased metabolism can help burn more calories, even while at rest.
Deep Sweating: Infrared saunas induce sweating, which can lead to temporary weight loss by reducing water weight. However, this loss is temporary and will be regained once you rehydrate.
While these benefits can contribute to weight loss in the short term, they should complement, rather than replace, a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Yes, detoxification, along with relaxation, is a key benefit of infrared saunas. In this context, detoxification involves the body’s process of removing or neutralizing toxins, primarily through sweating.
When exposed to the infrared heat of the sauna, your body’s temperature rises, which stimulates your sweat glands and promotes deep sweating. This type of perspiration is believed to help expel a higher concentration of toxins that can accumulate over time, such as heavy metals like lead and mercury, as well as environmental chemicals. Additionally, the sauna’s heat can boost blood circulation, further aiding in the removal of toxins from your body.
Infrared saunas can emit three types of infrared light—near-infrared, mid-infrared, and far-infrared—each offering different benefits:
Near-Infrared (NIR): NIR light has the shortest wavelength and penetrates the skin’s surface efficiently, targeting superficial tissues.
Mid-Infrared (MIR): MIR wavelengths penetrate deeper into the body’s soft tissues, helping to address inflammation.
Far-Infrared (FIR): FIR wavelengths are the longest and penetrate the deepest. FIR saunas are commonly used for detoxification, as they stimulate the sweat glands to produce a deep, purifying sweat that helps remove toxins from the body.
Keep in mind that saunas are not a replacement for medical treatment and should not be used to diagnose or treat any diseases. Individuals with medical conditions, pregnant women, and those who are elderly or very young should consult a healthcare provider before using a sauna.
The primary distinction between infrared saunas and traditional steam saunas lies in their heating methods. Infrared saunas use infrared light to directly warm the body, while steam saunas generate heat by warming the surrounding air. This leads to different experiences: infrared saunas operate at lower temperatures and offer a less humid, more comfortable environment compared to the higher temperatures and moisture of steam saunas. Yes! More information about halotherapy/salt therapy can be found on our Research hub here.
In the 1840s, a Polish doctor named Feliks Boczkowski noticed something interesting while treating workers in the Wieleczka Salt Mines. Unlike other miners who routinely experienced lung problems from breathing in the pollutants in the mines, he found that patients rarely had respiratory issues. Boczkowski attributed this to the high salt content in the cave’s microclimate, and he published a treatise detailing his theories in 1843. Several years later, one of his pupils opened the first salt inhalation clinic in Poland.
This was not the first time people had drawn the connection between salt content in the air, and improved respiratory health. Catholic monks in Europe regularly brought people with respiratory issues into salt caves, and then crushed the salt with their feet to release it into the air. Salt therapy was also used in the days of ancient Greece and Rome.
20 million years ago, Eastern Europe was partially covered by a shallow sea. With the disappearance of the sea, large amounts of layered salt were left behind. In the 14th century, people started to mine salt for their own use and for sale. Large salt mines were developed in the south of Poland, near Krakow, leaving huge chambers deep in the mountains. Over time, it was discovered that salt miners, as a result of working in the salt mines, had very few respiratory conditions, looked much younger than their age, and rarely got sick.
99.99% pure sodium chloride (pharmaceutical grade salt). It contains no fillers or caking agents. It comes from a natural source and is naturally processed to remove all of its impure elements. It is the same salt that hospitals use and is the same type of salt used in Halotherapy research.
Halotherapy is a natural therapy, however any clients who have any serious health conditions or women who are pregnant should always seek proper medical advice before using the HALOONE®.
Contraindications include:
- Infections associated with a fever
- Respiratory system cancers
- Tuberculosis
- Cardiac disease patients
- Acute respiratory disease
- Severe hypertension
- Chronic obstructive lung diseases
There are typically no side effects other than the taste of salt and potentially thirst, or a scratchy throat. However, if someone is on any medications or suffers from any serious medical issue please seek medical advice before any therapy.

Red light therapy has shown promising benefits in wound healing. However, we recommend consulting with a healthcare professional for specific guidance on using red light therapy for fresh wounds or injuries. They can provide personalized advice based on your condition and the stage of healing.
No, special eye protection is not necessary. Clearlight Red Light Therapy can be used without eye protection, and standard sunglasses provide adequate protection. We include optional goggles with our products for added comfort during the adjustment period.
Your red light session will depend on how close you are to the unit. If you are within 6″ of the red light, we recommend a 15-20 minute session per treatment area. If you are 12″+ from the red light, we recommend a 20-30 minute session per treatment area. You can’t really overdo it, but sessions longer than noted above may not bring you additional benefits.
Red light therapy is less invasive and operates at lower energy levels, making it suitable for regular use and targeting a wider range of wellness applications compared to laser therapy.
“In choosing a Sauna, I shopped the Internet. CLEARLIGHT was the obvious winner for nice designs, state-of-the-art sauna technology and quality construction. Believe me, I checked them all.”
