A new treatment: thermal therapy for chronic fatigue syndrome.

A study conducted by Akinori Masuda, Takao Munemoto, and Chuwa Tei explored the effects of thermal therapy using far-infrared ray dry saunas on patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). CFS is a debilitating condition marked by persistent fatigue, pain, and other symptoms that significantly impair daily functioning. In the study, 13 patients with CFS underwent regular thermal therapy sessions, which involved exposure to far-infrared saunas. Two patients showed dramatic improvements in symptoms such as fatigue, pain, and low-grade fever, and one patient was able to stop using prednisolone medication and successfully reintegrate into social activities. Additionally, 11 other patients experienced improvements in their physical symptoms, including fatigue and pain. The therapy also provided benefits for mildly depressed patients, reducing appetite loss and alleviating subjective complaints.
The researchers concluded that repeated exposure to far-infrared sauna therapy could be an effective treatment for chronic fatigue syndrome, offering relief from both physical and psychological symptoms. The gentle heat from the infrared rays promotes relaxation, reduces pain, and may help regulate the autonomic nervous system, which plays a role in the fatigue and stress experienced by CFS patients. These promising results suggest that infrared sauna therapy could be a valuable complementary treatment for CFS, helping to alleviate symptoms and potentially improve quality of life for those affected by the condition.
