Phantom limb pain treated by far infrared ray

In a study conducted by Chi-Yu Huang and colleagues, a novel treatment using far infrared (FIR) therapy was tested on a patient suffering from severe phantom limb pain, a condition that causes intense pain in a limb that has been amputated. The patient, who had experienced debilitating pain for ten years, also struggled with muscle spasms and twitching in the stump. Despite trying various treatments, including medications and even two rounds of sympathectomy (a surgical procedure to cut nerves and relieve pain), the patient found little lasting relief. In this study, FIR therapy was applied to the site where the amputated limb had been, rather than the stump itself, for 40-minute sessions twice a week. After one month of treatment, the patient’s phantom pain reduced significantly, from a pain rating of 9 (on a scale of 0 to 10) to 4, and continued to improve over the next few months, with the pain dropping to 2-3 after two months. By the fifth month of treatment, the frequency and duration of pain attacks were greatly reduced, providing lasting relief.

The results from this study suggest that FIR therapy may offer a simple, non-invasive, and effective alternative for managing phantom limb pain, especially for patients who have not responded well to conventional treatments. The patient’s pain intensity significantly decreased, and the duration of pain attacks shortened dramatically, ultimately preventing the need for a third sympathectomy. This research highlights the potential of infrared therapy, often used in treatments like infrared saunas, to help alleviate chronic pain, particularly in conditions like phantom limb pain where other treatments have failed. The study was conducted by Chi-Yu Huang, Rong-Sen Yang, Te-Son Kuo, and Kai-Hsiung Hsu, who explored the use of FIR as an innovative therapeutic approach for managing severe pain.
