Targeting mitochondrial dysfunction in the treatment of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) – a clinical audit

In a study conducted by Sarah Myhill, Norman E. Booth, and John McLaren-Howard, 138 patients with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) were evaluated using the ATP Profile biomedical test, revealing that all participants had measurable mitochondrial dysfunction. The researchers developed a comprehensive treatment approach, which included dietary adjustments, ensuring good quality sleep, a standard package of nutritional supplements, and balancing work with rest. The treatment was tailored for each patient based on individual test results, clinical history, and additional nutritional assessments. A key part of the treatment for mitochondrial dysfunction included therapies to improve antioxidant status and selective chelation, with infrared sauna therapy being specifically recommended for its ability to detoxify and support mitochondrial health.

The study found that patients who adhered to the full treatment protocol, including the use of far-infrared saunas, experienced significant improvements in mitochondrial function. On average, these patients showed a fourfold improvement in mitochondrial activity, as measured by the ATP Profile. This suggests that infrared saunas, which promote detoxification and enhance circulation, may be a valuable tool in managing chronic fatigue syndrome by addressing the underlying mitochondrial dysfunction that is common in these patients. The research highlights the potential of infrared sauna therapy as an adjunct treatment for ME/CFS, helping patients restore cellular energy production and improve overall well-being.
